Hmong Flag

Some may argue that the need for a flag is unecessary because the Hmongs have no country.  Although flags are commonly used to represent countries, history shows that flags have also been used by various groups of people or orginizations for identification purposes.  Schools, sororities, sports teams, and etc, all use some form of a flag or color combinations to represent themselves.  The Hmong have every right to forge an identity through the use of flags if they choose.  For those who want to have a better understanding of flags, please refer to Wikipedia. In short, for the world to recognize the Hmong people, they must continuously strive to find ways to identify themselves. These flags are just one of those ways.

Comment: Flag #1

The statues on the four corners represent Hmong spread around the world, the bottom statues symbolize the begining of new life and the top one symbolized Hmong should reach their full potential (strength, knowledge, equal right as other). Also, they as one represents a peaceful group or mankind. The star respresents a leader watches over all his people or a guider. The moon and star both could mean no matter where and how far the group has been spread, they should be connected or they would always be who they are. The middle arrow means keep connecting and or supporting each other. The other two arrows stand for giving strength and sympathy to those who are lower than them. These expressions are based on Hmong life. (Source:Nchou Vang)

thov ntxim ntau, cov chij no tseem zoo tsis tau txaus. Vim nws muaj ntau yam cim thiab ntau yam xiv nyob rau hauv tus chij. Peb txhob siv ib tug cim twg los piv rau ib tug coj twg. Vim peb muaj ntau tus zoo thawj coj dhau los nrog peb nyob, ib tiam dhaus ib tiam nawd. Peb yuav siv tsis tau ib tug mloov dabtsi los ua tus cim thiab. vim yam ntawm tsuas yog kev caij dab qhuas los yog cawm seej ntawd sab ntsuj nplig. Peb xav tau ib tug chij qhia txog kev koom siab, cia siab thiab txoj cai ncaj ncees xwb. kuv xav tias ib tug cim thiab ib yam xim xwb thiaj zoo (Source: Anonymous).

I bet you guys get all kinds are comments and remarks about these flags. Some of these flags, I like, and some I don't like, but that's not my point today. My comment is that these Hmong flags are a good start. And until I can motivate myself and take action to create something better than these flags, bashing these flags is counter-productive. So Hmong people, keep up the good work because these flags will someday inspire somone to do better. (Source: Anonymous)

Comment: 1st flag: too busy and too primitive. 2nd flag: nice center piece, but looks foreign and the issue with the stars/clans has already been brought up. 3rd flag: terribad. 4th flag: screams islam and we are definately not muslims.  further, the qeej is not just a hmong instrument because other ethnics use it too. 5th flag:  islam again and the stars and the qeej (Source: Anonymous).

Comment: The blue flag is a modified of the current blue flag (Hmong Flag #2) that show on your site. In the center of the blue flag consist of 18 white five points star form the shape of a circle. Inside the center of the 18 white five points start circle is a pair of ox horn and top center of the ox horn is a respect Hmong instrument (Qeej) both in white. (Source: Jiang)

Comment: The orange flag is a redesigned flag of the Hmong Mojthem flag. The orange flag consist of 6 blue triangle on the far left side of the flag, the 6 blue triangle stack on top of each other to form a "I" shape and pointing to the right. In the center of the orange flag is a pair of ox horn and top center of the ox horn is a respect Hmong instrument (Qeej) in white. (Source:Jiang)

Comment: I like the blue flag, but I don't like the 18 stars. If the 18 stars represent the 18 Hmong clans, then what happens if we discover that there is more than 18 Hmong clans in the world. Do we add another star to the flag? For example, it is very possible that there is more than 18 clans when there is about 10 million Hmong people living in the world. I believe having 18 stars will only contribute the divisionality that already exsist in the Hmong society. I don't like the red flag. It looks too complex to comprehend and in a way it looks kind of scary. I love the idea of having a Hmong flag, but I think a good Hmong flag should be undisputable when every Hmong individual looks at it. This way everyone will be proud to fly it. Hopefully, I will live till the day all the Hmong people around the world can come together and create a flag that we can all be proud to fly as the only Hmong Flag. (Source: Anonymous)

Comment: Regarding to the Hmong flag (the blue one). Did any of you see the blooming flowing in the middle of the flag as the four spirits come together? The meaning is that when Hmong people realize their true identify, leave their differences and come together for a common purpose of secure future of survive of it identity. Its' prosperity will show and continue to growth like a flower blooming in the spring. (Source: Anonymous)

Comment: My interpretation of the blue flag: (which i like more than the red one). The 18 stars represent the 18 hmong clans. These stars could of been placed in a line, or in a "V". But they were placed in a big circle. This tells me the stars represents that there are hmongs scattered around the world, which is true. The insignia in the middle represents the dead ancestors that we worship. When i look at the red dots in the middle, it doesn't fit the flag. But then if i think about it a bit, i think the red dots in the middle represents bloodshed and pain. When i thought about it deeper. It can only be one thing. the red dot represents Shong Lue Yang. It is red because he was murdered. And it's in the middle of everything because he is the hmong leader. (Source: Anonymous)

Comment: Flag # 2: The 18 stars represent the 18 Hmong clans uniting as one.  The insignia in the middle represents the living spirits of the Hmong people.  The red represents the blood that makes us all Hmong. (Source: Anonymous)
